Interesting Times Come With Consequences

“May you live in interesting times.”

This phrase is often described as an ancient Chinese proverb, sometimes even as a curse, though there’s no clear record of it in Chinese literature. The phrase likely originated in the West. It endured because it captures something real about periods of disruption.

Interesting times aren’t calm or predictable; they are periods when the systems people rely on begin to shift, often quickly and without clear direction. What feels like progress at the outset often turns into instability in practice. The phrase carries a warning. Be careful what you ask for, because moments like this arrive with consequences that are difficult to anticipate and even harder to control.

We’re living in one of those moments.

Content Is Infinite. Signal Is Not.

There has never been more content available. At the same time, it has never been harder to decide what to do with it. Ideas, opinions, and analyses are produced and distributed at a breakneck pace. AI didn’t just accelerate this dynamic. It removed the constraints that kept it in check.

It has become easier to produce content that sounds credible, whether or not it’s grounded in real operating experience.

The result is an environment where much of what we encounter reads cleanly and passes as credible. It is often difficult to distinguish genuine expertise from work that reflects it. For operators, leaders, and founders, the challenge is not access to information. It’s deciding what matters and what to ignore.

In that context, one question shapes behavior and decision-making:

Who can I trust?

That question determines what people pay attention to, whose perspective they value, and what actions they take. Titles, logos, and company brands still matter, but they no longer carry the same authority. They create awareness, but they do not earn trust.

In a world where content is infinite, trust is scarce.

Influence Has Always Been Personal

This isn't a new dynamic.

As an analyst at Forrester, I saw this play out in practice. Clients didn’t just follow the firm. They followed their analyst. They built relationships with analysts whose perspectives they trusted. Over time, those relationships became lasting.

When analysts left, many clients followed their work and, in some cases, hired them directly.

The Forrester brand established initial credibility, but trust was built at the analyst level. That is more visible now than ever.

In a system saturated with content, the individual is the signal.

AI Scaled Content, Not Trust

AI has made it easier to produce content that sounds credible. It hasn’t made it easier to earn trust.

When everything appears polished, people don’t consume more. They become more selective. They look for consistency, perspective, and a body of work that holds up over time.

Your brand is how people decide whether your work is worth engaging with at all.

And that is a pretty big gap.

Start With Belief

If you are starting from scratch, you don’t need scale, budget, or an established audience.

When we started Meerkat, we had none of those things. No brand recognition. No product in the market. No audience. No customer base. What we had was a shared belief about where work was headed and a commitment to operate from that belief.

That belief created initial momentum.

Your brand is your belief system made visible. If you’re not clear on what you stand for, nothing else will differentiate you.

Choose a Point of View

You need to define a point of view and express it consistently.

In a world where anyone can produce content, volume doesn’t differentiate. Clarity does. People need to understand what you believe and how you think.

For us, that means making deliberate choices about how we show up. There is a lot of fear and negativity in the conversation around AI and the future of work. We chose not to center our voice there. Instead, we focus on being human, grounded, and optimistic about what is possible.

That doesn't ignore reality. It reflects a conscious choice about the experience we want to create.

Make It Real

A point of view only matters if people can experience it.

That is the thinking behind The Ways We Work. It was not designed as a product channel or a promotional vehicle. It was designed as a space to engage with the questions people are grappling with. How work is changing. What skills matter. How to stay relevant.

We publish consistently, bring in other voices, and focus on what is useful. Over time, that creates familiarity and credibility.

Brand is not what you say about yourself. It is what people experience when they engage with your ideas.

Find Your First Believers

In the early stages, progress comes from a small group of people who choose to engage.

You don’t need a huge audience. You need your first believers.

For us, that meant reaching out to people in our network and inviting them to participate. Some contributed. Some amplified. Some engaged. All of it mattered.

Those interactions matter more than any program you could design. They create connections and give people reasons to care. People don’t promote companies in the abstract. They promote people, ideas, and experiences they believe in.

Grow Through Others

It happens by connecting to existing networks rather than building everything from square one.

When you partner with people who already have credibility and create space for their perspective, you reach extended audiences faster and build trust more efficiently.

Build With People

Trust matters when it drives action.

For us, that is most visible in how we build the product. From the beginning, we treated users as participants. They test, challenge, and shape what we prioritize.

When users see their input reflected, they become invested. Some of the most valuable aspects of what we have built came directly from those interactions.

Where Trust Starts

People follow individuals before they follow companies.

Trust is built through how you show up, how you engage, and how consistently useful you are. That is what creates the initial connection.

Once trust is established, it can extend into something larger. But it has to feel earned.

Final Frame

If you’re building your brand today, the path is simple but not easy. You need to be clear about what you believe. You need to express it consistently. And you need to make it useful to the people you want to reach.

That work compounds through repetition, not scale. Through interaction, not reach. Through clarity, not volume.

If you involve others early, treat them as participants, and stay grounded in something real, trust builds.

And in a world where content is infinite, trust is what determines whose voice soars.
